Abstract
An apparatus and method for treating a cutting edge with a carbide coating to form a high endurance cutting edge that is self sharpening. The cutting edge has one side of its bevel treated with an electronically impregnated coating to create a wear resistant surface employing Tungsten, Titanium or Vanadium Carbide. The coating providing an abrasion resistant cutting edge and creates a differential hardness on the total cutting edge thereby extending its cutting ability through a wear-resistant surface on its treated face and a faster wear on the untreated surface causing the cutting edge to be self sharpening.
Claims25
A tool post for depositing an electrode material onto a cutting edge comprising:
- a support base having an upper surface;
- at least one guide post secured to said upper surface of said support base, said guide post including at least one guide rail extending perpendicular to guide post and parallel to said upper surface;
- an electrode holder secured to said upper surface of said support base, said electrode holder electrically coupled to an electronic charge generator;
- and
- an electrode having a proximal end securable to said electrode holder and extending outward therefrom in a parallel plane to said upper surface of said support base, said electrode having a distal end extending through said support post and juxtapositioned to said guide rail,
- wherein said electrode receives voltage from said charge generator to create a pulsed electric discharge whereby one bevel of a cutting edge drawn along said guide rail receives a deposit of material from said electrode forming a differential hardened self sharpening cutting edge along the length of the bevel.
A self sharpening cutting edge formed from the process of:
- shaping a metal shank having a Rockwell C hardness less than about 65 to include a first bevel extending from a spine along a first side of said shank to an edge and a second side bevel extending from said edge to a spine along a second side of said shank;
- drawing said first bevel of said metal shank along a spark deposition tool post having at least one guide and at least one electrode, said electrode depositing material on said first bevel by pulsed electric discharge between said metal shank and said electrode;
- wherein said tool post is constructed and arranged to maintain said first bevel a distance from said electrode, said material deposit on said first bevel forming a differential hardened self sharpening cutting edge.
