Abstract
Methods and devices relating to polymer blend/bioceramic composite implantable medical devices are disclosed.
Claims14
A method for fabricating an implantable medical device comprising:
- forming a suspension solution including a fluid, a matrix polymer and bioceramic particles, wherein the polymer is dissolved in the fluid, and wherein the bioceramic particles are dispersed in the solution;
- allowing at least some of matrix polymer to precipitate upon combining the suspension solution with a second fluid, the second fluid being a poor solvent for the matrix polymer, wherein at least some of the bioceramic particles precipitate with the precipitated polymer to form a composite mixture;
- mixing the composite mixture with a modifier polymer and additional matrix polymer to form a second composite mixture, the bioceramic particles being dispersed within the second composite mixture by the mixing, wherein the modifier polymer has discrete phase segments, the discrete phase segments being immiscible with the matrix polymer, the modifier polymer further comprising anchor segments that are miscible with the matrix polymer;
- and
- fabricating a medical device from the second composite mixture.
