Network-based implementation of velocity controls for a mobile communication device

A method for controlling network communications, the method comprising:

• receiving a request to initiate a network communication between a mobile station operably coupled to a wireless network and another communication device;
• computing a velocity of the mobile station in response to the request to initiate the network communication;
• comparing the computed velocity of the mobile station with a velocity threshold;
• and
• implementing a network-based restrictive action to prevent completion of the network communication in response to a determination that the computed velocity of the mobile station exceeds the velocity threshold, wherein the network-based restrictive action occurs at a network component separate from the mobile station.

A method for controlling text messaging on a mobile station, the method comprising:

• receiving a request to initiate a text message between a mobile station and another communication device;
• computing a velocity of the mobile station in response to the request to initiate the text message, wherein the velocity of the mobile station is computed outside of the mobile station;
• comparing the computed velocity of the mobile station with a velocity threshold, wherein the computed velocity is compared with the velocity threshold within a network component outside of the mobile station;
• and
• preventing delivery of the text message in response to a determination that the computed velocity of the mobile station exceeds the velocity threshold, wherein the delivery is prevented outside of the mobile station within a network system to which the mobile station is operably coupled.
