A method for operating an audio host device having an electrical interface to a microphone-speaker combination, the electrical interface having a microphone contact, a speaker contact, and a power return contact, the method, comprising:
- selecting between (1) a differential microphone sensing mode in which an input of a difference amplifier is coupled to the power return contact through an attenuator, and (2) a single-ended sensing mode in which the input is isolated from the power return contact, in accordance with a type of microphone-speaker combination that is to be coupled to the electrical interface;
- establishing a connection with a remote device for a two-way audio communications session;
- and
- performing the two-way audio communications session using the difference amplifier as configured in accordance with the selected microphone sensing mode.
