Abstract
In accordance with the present invention, a compact laser system with nearly continuous wavelength scanning is presented. In some embodiments, the compact laser system can be scanned over a broad range. In some embodiments, the compact laser system can be scanned at high scan rates. In some embodiments, the compact laser system can have a variable coherence length. In particular, embodiments with wavelength scanning over 140 nm with continuously variable scan rates of up to about 1 nm/μs, and discrete increase in scan rates up to about 10 nm/μs, and variable coherence lengths of from 1 mm to about 30 mm can be achieved.
Claims6
A method of sweeping a laser light source, comprising:
- providing an optical cavity that supports a plurality of optical modes, the optical cavity including an optical gain medium;
- generating lasing of a set of optical modes within the optical cavity, the optical modes being related to an output wavelength and the set of optical modes being of the plurality of optical modes;
- tuning the output wavelength of the light source while holding a cavity length of the cavity substantially constant, wherein the output wavelength is tuned continuously across the set of optical modes as the set of optical modes is tuned through the plurality of optical modes with a wavelength selection device having a filter function, the filter function has a filter function width that allows the set of optical modes to simultaneously lase within the optical cavity.
