Abstract
A system and method for performing a handoff is presented. A preferred embodiment comprises initiating a pre-handoff registration of a piece of user equipment prior to the actual handoff in order to pre-register the piece of user equipment with the new access network. During the handoff a tunnel may be created from the original access network to the new access network in order to tunnel data packets that would otherwise have been lost prior to the completion of the handoff.

A communication network comprising:
- a control network system comprising a home subscriber database, the home subscriber database configured to bind an identity of a first piece of user equipment to a locator of the first piece of user equipment.
The method of claim 7, wherein the control network operates in a split identity and locator architecture.
A method of communicating data, the method comprising:
- transmitting a pre-handoff registration request from a first gateway in a control network to a second gateway in the control network;
- and
- initiating a handoff from the first gateway to the second gateway after the pre-handoff registration request.
A method of transmitting data, the method comprising:
- transmitting a tunnel request from a first gateway in a control network to a second gateway in the control network;
- setting up a tunnel between the first gateway and the second gateway;
- transmitting data packets from the first gateway to the second gateway after a handoff from the first gateway to the second gateway has been initiated and prior to the handoff being complete.
