Abstract
Cutters for a drill bit wherein the cutters have at least one groove in a face of a superabrasive table of the cutters. The cutters may also include ribs adjacent to the at least one groove.
Claims29
A cutting element for use in drilling subterranean formations, comprising:
- a volume of superabrasive material including:
- a cutting face extending in two dimensions and generally transverse to a longitudinal axis of the cutting element;
- a rear boundary located aft of the cutting face;
- and
- at least one groove in the cutting face beginning proximate a periphery of the cutting face and extending across at least a portion of the cutting face.

A cutting element for use on a bit for drilling subterranean formations, comprising:
- a volume of diamond material including:
- a cutting face extending in two dimensions and generally transverse to a longitudinal axis of the cutting element, the cutting face having at least a portion located at a non-perpendicular angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cutting element;
- a rear boundary;
- and
- at least one groove in a cutting edge beginning at approximately a periphery of the cutting face and extending across at least a portion of the cutting face.
2 more elements
A drilling apparatus having at least one cutting element thereon for use in drilling subterranean formations, the at least one cutting element comprising:
- a volume of superabrasive material including:
- a cutting face extending in two dimensions and generally transverse to a longitudinal axis of the at least one cutting element;
- a rear boundary located aft of the cutting face;
- and
- at least one groove in the cutting face beginning proximate a periphery of the cutting face and extending across at least a portion of the cutting face.
