Abstract
In a telecommunications system, in which a connection comprises a part with an interworking function at both ends, a channel is allocated to the connection between the interworking functions. The required channel capabilities may vary during the connection, whereby the channel capabilities should be changed. When the first interworking function detects that a channel capability must be changed, a first message, which indicates the desired capability change, is transmitted (2-1) to the second interworking function; and the channel capability is changed (2-3,2-5) into the desired one at both ends of the part.
Claims3
A method for communicating via a channel established between a first interworking function and a second interworking function, the method comprising:
- detecting at the first interworking function that a channel capability change is desirable;
- transmitting to the second interworking function a first message that indicates that the channel capability change is desirable;
- receiving a second message from the second interworking function indicating whether the channel capability change can or cannot be performed;
- on condition that the channel capability change cannot be performed, the first interworking function re-transmitting the first message after a predetermined time period, or the second interworking function transmitting a new first message after the predetermined time period.
A first network device for communicating via a communication channel with a second network device including a second interworking function, the first network device comprising:
- a first interworking function configured to detect that a channel capability change is desirable;
- a transmitter configured to transmit to the second interworking function that the channel capability change is desirable;
- a receiver configured to receive a second message from the second interworking function indicating whether the channel capability change can or cannot be performed;
- at least one of the first interworking function or the second interworking function being further configured to re-transmit at least one of the first message or a new first message after a predetermined time period on condition that the channel capability change cannot be performed.
A first node for communicating with a user channel and a network communication channel coupled to a second node including a second interworking function, the first node comprising:
- a first interworking function configured to establish a first connection via the user channel and a second connection via the network channel to the second interworking function located in the second node;
- the first interworking function being configured to detect that a channel capability of the channel should be changed;
- a transmitter configured to transmit to the second interworking function a first message that indicates a desired capability change for the channel;
- a receiver configured to receive a second message indicating that the desired capability change cannot be performed by the second interworking function, the second message indicating a new desired capability change that can be performed by the second interworking function;
- and
- the first interworking function being configured to change the channel capability of the channel into the new desired capability in response to the reception of the second message on a condition that the first interworking can perform the new desired capability,
- wherein at least one of the first node or the second interworking function is comprised by an end-user device or a device with which an end-user is directly coupled.
