Heterogeneous storage array optimization through eviction

A method for optimizing utilization of heterogeneous computer-readable storage media of multiple storage devices, the heterogeneous computer-readable storage media providing persistent storage of computer-readable data, the method comprising the steps of:

• receiving one or more eviction triggers, each individually providing information describing one or more of:
• a policy, a set of data stored on the heterogeneous computer-readable storage media, and a status of one or more of the heterogeneous computer-readable storage media;
• determining, based on at least one of the received eviction triggers, to evict a first set of computer-readable data from a first computer-readable storage medium of the heterogeneous computer-readable storage media to a second computer-readable storage medium of the heterogeneous computer-readable storage media, wherein the first computer-readable storage medium is part of a first storage device of the multiple storage devices and the second computer-readable storage medium is part of a second storage device of the multiple storage devices that is different from the first storage device, and wherein further the first computer-readable storage medium and the second computer-readable storage medium are of different types;
• and
• evicting the first set of computer-readable data from the first computer-readable storage medium to the second computer-readable storage medium.

A storage device for use with a computing device that is communicationally coupled to other storage devices, the storage device comprising a computer-readable storage medium and control circuitry, the control circuitry performing steps comprising:

• receiving one or more eviction triggers, wherein at least one eviction trigger of the received eviction triggers provides information describing a status of the computer-readable storage medium;
• determining, based on at least one of the received eviction triggers, to evict a first set of computer-readable data from the computer-readable storage medium to a second computer-readable storage medium of a second storage device from among the other storage devices, wherein the computer-readable storage medium and the second computer-readable storage medium are of different types;
• and
• evicting the first set of computer-readable data from the computer-readable storage medium to the second computer-readable storage medium.
