Abstract
A method and apparatus for traversing a firewall between an Intranet and the Internet without the use of a proxy server is provided. Internet Small Computer Systems Interface (iSCSI) streaming over a firewall is provided by tunneling iSCSI over Hypertext Transport Protocol (Security) (HTTP(S)).

A method comprising:
- encapsulating a block oriented storage protocol request in a network protocol application layer message to be forwarded to a remote storage server over a storage area network;
- and
- receiving a response to the storage protocol request, the response encapsulated in another network protocol application layer message transmitted from the remote storage server.
An apparatus comprising:
- a storage manager to establish a connection to a remote storage server;
- and
- a streaming agent to encapsulate a block oriented storage protocol request in a network protocol application layer message to be forwarded to the remote storage server over a storage area network and to receive a response to the storage protocol request, the response encapsulated in another network protocol application layer message transmitted from the remote storage server.
An article including a machine-accessible medium having associated information, wherein the information, when accessed, results in a machine performing:
- encapsulating a block oriented storage protocol request in a network protocol application layer message to be forwarded to a remote storage server over a storage area network;
- and
- receiving a response to the storage protocol request, the response encapsulated in another network protocol application layer message transmitted from the remote storage server.
A system comprising:
- a dynamic random access memory accessible by a processor;
- and
- a co-processor independent of the processor, the co-processor comprising memory, the memory independent of the dynamic random access memory accessible by the processor, the memory comprising:
- a storage manager to establish a connection to a remote storage server;
- and
- a streaming agent to encapsulate a block oriented storage protocol request in a network protocol application layer message to be forwarded to the remote storage server over a storage area network and to receive a response to the storage protocol request, the response encapsulated in another network protocol application layer message transmitted from the remote storage server.
