Abstract
Disclosed herein are methods and compositions for producing articular repair materials and for repairing an articular surface. In particular, methods for providing articular repair systems. Also provided are articular surface repair systems designed to replace a selected area cartilage, for example, and surgical tools for repairing articular surfaces.

A method of selecting an orthopedic implant for repairing an articular surface of a joint using a computer system, the method comprising:
- obtaining electronic image data of a joint of a patient;
- deriving a shape of bone of the joint from the image data;
- determining electronically from the derived shape one or more dimensions associated with an articular surface of the bone;
- and
- selecting an articular implant from a library of implants based on the one or more dimensions associated with the articular surface.
A method of designing an orthopedic implant for repairing an articular surface of a joint using a computer system, the method comprising:
- obtaining electronic image data of a joint of a patient;
- deriving a shape of bone of the joint from the image data;
- determining electronically from the derived shape one or more dimensions associated with an articular surface of the joint;
- and
- designing an articular implant based on the one or more dimensions associated with the articular surface of the patient's joint.
A method of selecting an articular implant for implantation in a joint of a patient, the method comprising:
- obtaining image data of the patient's joint;
- deriving a shape of an articular surface of the patient's joint from the image;
- and
- selecting an articular implant having an outer surface with at least one dimension that corresponds to at least one dimension of the derived shape of the articular surface, and having an inner surface with at least a portion configured to abut cut bone.
A method of designing an orthopedic implant for implantation in a joint of a patient, the method comprising:
- obtaining image data of the patient's joint;
- deriving a shape of an articular surface of the patient's joint from the image;
- and
- designing an articular implant wherein an outer surface of the articular implant is based on dimensions of the articular surface and wherein an inner surface of the implant has at least a portion configured to abut cut bone.
A method of selecting an articular implant for repairing an articular surface of a joint using a computer system, the method comprising:
- obtaining electronic image data of a joint of a patient;
- deriving a shape of a surface of cartilage of the joint from the image data;
- determining electronically from the derived shape one or more dimensions associated with an articular surface of the joint;
- and
- selecting an articular implant from a library of implants based on the one or more dimensions associated with the articular surface.
A method of designing an articular implant for repairing an articular surface of a joint using a computer system, the method comprising:
- obtaining electronic image data of a joint of a patient;
- deriving a shape of a surface of cartilage of the joint from the image data;
- determining electronically from the derived shape one or more dimensions associated with an articular surface of the joint;
- and
- designing an articular implant based on the one or more dimensions associated with the articular surface.
A method of designing an orthopedic implant for repairing an articular surface of a joint using a computer system, the method comprising:
- obtaining electronic image data of a joint of a patient;
- deriving a shape of bone of the joint from the image data;
- determining electronically from the derived shape one or more dimensions associated with an articular surface;
- and
- selecting an articular implant from a library of implants based on the one or more dimensions associated with the articular surface of the patient's joint.
A method of designing an orthopedic implant for repairing an articular surface of a joint using a computer system, the method comprising:
- obtaining electronic image data of a joint of a patient;
- deriving a shape of an articular surface of the joint from the image data;
- and
- designing an articular implant from the derived shape of the articular surface of the patient's joint, wherein an inner surface of the articular implant has at least a portion configured to abut cut bone.
A method of designing an orthopedic implant for repairing an articular surface of a joint using a computer system, the method comprising:
- obtaining electronic image data of a joint of a patient;
- deriving a shape of bone of the joint from the image data;
- designing an articular implant from the derived shape of the articular surface of the patient's joint,
- wherein the implant has at least one radius in at least one dimension that is derived from the shape of the bone.
A method of designing an orthopedic implant for repairing an articular surface of a joint using a computer system, the method comprising:
- obtaining electronic image data of a joint of a patient;
- deriving a shape of cartilage of the joint from the image data;
- designing an articular implant from the derived shape of the articular surface of the patient's joint,
- wherein the implant has at least on radius in at least one dimension that is derived from the shape of the bone, and
- and having an inner surface with at least a portion configured to abut cut bone.
