High speed power supply system

A power supply system for providing power to a radio frequency (RF) power amplifier, comprising:

• a power source configured to generate first output power in a first frequency range;
• a power supply configured to generate second output power in a second frequency range, a lower end of the second frequency range being at least higher than a lower end of the first frequency range;
• a power combiner circuit configured to combine the first output power with the second output power to generate combined, third output power for providing power to the RF power amplifier, the RF power amplifier receiving and amplifying a RF input signal to generate a RF output signal under control of the third output power;
• and
• a feedback circuit coupled to receive the RF output signal through a feedback loop, the feedback circuit configured to compare the RF output signal with a predetermined control signal and generate a power supply control signal for controlling the power supply based on a difference between the RF output signal and the predetermined control signal, the power supply control signal not controlling the power source.

A power amplifier controller circuit for controlling a power amplifier, the power amplifier coupled to receive and amplify a radio frequency (RF) input signal to generate an RF output signal, the power amplifier controller circuit comprising:

• an amplitude control loop configured to determine an amplitude correction signal indicative of an amplitude difference between an amplitude of the input signal to the power amplifier and an attenuated amplitude of the output signal of the power amplifier;
• and
• a power supply system including:
• a power source configured to generate first output power in a first frequency range;
• a power supply configured to generate second output power in a second frequency range, a lower end of the second frequency range being at least higher than a lower end of the first frequency range;
• a power combiner circuit configured to combine the first output power with the second output power to generate combined, third output power while providing frequency-selective isolation between the first output power and the second output power, the third output power providing power to the power amplifier;
• and
• a feedback circuit coupled to receive the combined, third output power through a feedback loop, the feedback circuit configured to compare the third output power with the amplitude correction signal and generate a power supply control signal for controlling the power supply based on a difference between the third output power and the amplitude correction signal, the power supply control signal not controlling the power source.
