Transdermal venous access locking solution

A medical device coated with a composition comprising a C4-C9 carboxylate antimicrobial agent and a second agent selected from the group consisting of:

• (a) an anticoagulant, (b) an antithrombotic agent and (c) a chelating agent, wherein the agents are included in therapeutically effective amounts of between about 0.001 mg/mL and about 1000 mg/mL.

A process for coating a medical device comprising exposing the medical device to a composition for a sufficient amount of time to provide a coating on the exposed surface of the device, wherein the composition comprises a C4-C9 carboxylate antimicrobial agent and a second agent selected from the group consisting of a chelating agent, an anticoagulant, and an antithrombotic agent, wherein the agents are included in a therapeutically effective amount between about 0.001 mg/mL and about 1000 mg/mL.

A method for locking and/or flushing an implanted catheter, said method comprising:

• filling a lumen of an implanted catheter open to a body lumen with a locking and/or flushing solution comprising a C4-C9 carboxylate antimicrobial agent and a second agent selected from the group consisting of:
• (a) an anticoagulant, (b) an antithrombotic agent and (c) a chelating agent, wherein the agents are included in therapeutically effective amounts of between about 0.001 mg/mL and about 1000 mg/mL.

A method of disinfecting an implanted catheter;

• said method comprising:
• introducing to a lumen of a catheter an antimicrobial solution comprising a C4-C9 carboxylate antimicrobial agent and a second agent selected from the group consisting of:
• (a) an anticoagulant, (b) an antithrombotic agent and (c) a chelating agent, wherein the agents are included in therapeutically effective amounts of between about 0.001 mg/mL and about 1000 mg/mL.
