A method for inducing or maintaining general anesthesia in an animal comprising administering to the animal an effective amount of a (−)-stereoisomer of formula (I):

- or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or prodrug thereof.
A method for promoting sedation in an animal comprising administering to the animal an effective amount of a (−)-stereoisomer of formula (I):
