Abstract
The present invention relates to compositions and methods of using free radical scavengers with reduced 1O2 generation. In certain embodiments, these compositions and methods of use relate to fullerene-derived ketolactams and fullerene-derived keto lactam derivatives, fullerene derivatives, and/or fullerenes. In yet other embodiments, the invention relates to cosmetic or dermatological compositions comprising said free radical scavengers with reduced 1O2 generation.
Claims32
A Cx fullerene-derived ketolactam represented by formula I:
- wherein x is 60, 70, 76, 78, 84, or 90;
- R is a C1-C50 hydrocarbon chain, branched or unbranched, with unsaturation from zero up to maximal, optionally substituted with one aryl group, heteroaryl group, halogen atom, hydroxyl group, a branched or unbranched, with unsaturation from zero up to maximal alkoxy group, or a branched or unbranched, with unsaturation from zero up to maximal alkanoyloxy group, said aryl or heteroaryl being optionally substituted with a halogen atom, a hydroxyl group, a C1-C50 hydrocarbon chain, branched or unbranched, with unsaturation from zero up to maximal alkyl group, a C1-C50, linear alkoxy group, a C9-C50 branched alkoxy group, a C1-C50, branched or unbranched, with unsaturation from one up to maximal alkoxy group, a C1-C50, branched or unbranched, with unsaturation from zero up to maximal alkanoyloxy group, or a —O(CH2CH2O)nR′ group;
- n is 1 to 100 inclusive;
- and
- R′ is H, aryl, or a C1-C50 hydrocarbon chain, branched or unbranched, with unsaturation from zero up to maximal.

A cosmetic or dermatological composition, comprising:
- a fullerene or fullerene derivative;
- and
- a cosmetically or dermatologically acceptable carrier;
- wherein the composition has an absorbance value of greater than about 0.1 at a wavelength of 570 nm.
