Abstract
A fuel cell including a membrane electrode assembly composed of a ionically conductive member sandwiched between a pair of electrodes. At least one of the electrodes including a catalyst loading characterized by catalytic activity that varies in proportion to the catalyst loading. Moreover, the fuel cell includes a flow path for supplying gaseous reactants to the electrodes and the catalyst loading is varied according to the flow path geometry.
Claims5
A method of making a fuel cell, the fuel cell comprising a membrane electrode assembly comprising an ionically conductive member and an electrode, said electrode having a surface area comprising a catalyst, and a flow field having a plurality of serpentine flow paths facing said surface area;
- the method comprising:
- dividing the surface area into an array of regions of said surface area;
- varying the catalyst loading in the regions to provide at least one of uniform current densities or uniform temperatures for the regions during fuel cell operation.
A fuel cell comprising:
- a membrane electrode assembly comprising an ionically conductive member and an electrode, said electrode having an active area comprising a catalyst;
- and
- a flow field having a plurality of flow paths facing said active area of said electrode;
- wherein the flow paths comprise turn areas, wherein catalyst loading in the active area facing the turn areas is increased relative to catalyst loading in the active area facing adjacent flow path areas.
