Abstract
The present invention relates to compositions and methods for altering cell function. In particular, the present invention provides compositions comprising selenium (e.g., SEL-PLEX) and methods of using the same (e.g., as a therapeutic and/or prophylactic treatment). Additionally, the present invention demonstrates that specific forms of selenium (e.g., SEL-PLEX), when administered to a subject, possess the ability to alter (e.g., reduce) gene expression in various tissues (e.g., compared to expression in subjects not administered selenium).
Claims20
A method of preventing an increase in the expression of a gene encoding a tau kinase over a period of time in a subject comprising administering to said subject a composition comprising selenium over said period of time, wherein said administering results in a lower level of tau kinase gene expression in said subject in comparison to a subject not receiving said composition comprising selenium.
A method of treating a subject comprising:
- a) providing:
- i) a subject, wherein said subject is of any age throughout the lifespan;
- and
- ii) a composition comprising selenium;
- and
- b) administering said composition to said subject under conditions such that the expression of a gene encoding a tau kinase is reduced in said subject compared to expression of said gene encoding a tau kinase in a subject not administered said composition comprising selenium.
A method of reducing the expression of a gene encoding a tau kinase comprising administering a composition comprising selenium to a subject of any age throughout the lifespan, wherein said administering results in a lower expression of said gene encoding a tau kinase in comparison to a subject not administered said composition comprising selenium.
