## Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for controlling blood glucose level and a method for the prophylaxis or treatment of diabetes mellitus and/or its complications. The present invention further relates to an anti-diabetic formulation for controlling blood glucose level and/or for the prophylaxis or treatment of diabetes mellitus and/or its complications.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for controlling blood glucose level comprising administering a therapeutically effective amount of osthole or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof to a subject in need thereof, thereby reducing the blood glucose level in the subject.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the therapeutically effective amount is about 10 to about 200 mg/kg/day.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the therapeutically effective amount is about 50 mg/kg/day.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the osthole or pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof is administered to the subject parenterally or orally.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the subject is a mammal.

### Claim 6 (depends on 6)

The method according to claim 6, wherein the mammal is a human.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the blood glucose level is elevated due to diabetes mellitus.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, further comprising administering a second agent effective for controlling blood glucose level.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein osthole or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof is obtained by chemically synthesized or extracted from osthole-containing plants.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein osthole or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof is obtained from Cnidium plant.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein osthole or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof is obtained from Cnidium monnieri (L.) Cuss.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein osthole or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof is obtained from Cnidium fruit.

### Claim 13

A method for the prophylaxis or treatment of diabetes mellitus and/or its complications comprising administering a therapeutically effective amount of osthole or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof to a subject in need thereof.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method according to claim 13, wherein the therapeutically effective amount is about 10 to about 200 mg/kg/day.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The method according to claim 13, wherein the therapeutically effective amount is about 50 mg/kg/day.

### Claim 16 (depends on 13)

The method according to claim 13, wherein the osthole or pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof is administered to the subject parenterally or orally.

### Claim 17 (depends on 13)

The method according to claim 13, wherein the subject is a mammal.

### Claim 18 (depends on 13)

The method according to claim 13, wherein the mammal is a human.

### Claim 19 (depends on 13)

The method according to claim 13, wherein the diabetes mellitus is Type I.

### Claim 20 (depends on 13)

The method according to claim 13, wherein the diabetes mellitus is Type II.

### Claim 21 (depends on 13)

The method according to claim 13, further comprising administering a second agent effective for the prophylaxis or treatment of diabetes mellitus.

### Claim 22 (depends on 13)

The method according to claim 13, wherein osthole or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof is obtained by chemically synthesized or extracted from osthole-containing plants.

### Claim 23 (depends on 13)

The method according to claim 13, wherein osthole or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof is obtained from Cnidium plant.

### Claim 24 (depends on 13)

The method according to claim 13, wherein osthole or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof is obtained from Cnidium monnieri (L.) Cuss.

### Claim 25 (depends on 13)

The method according to claim 13, wherein osthole or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof is obtained from Cnidium fruit.
