## Abstract

Polymers suitable for binding aflatoxins for use for in solid phase extraction of aflatoxins and immobilisation of aflatoxins in solid phase extraction (SPE) cartridges for qualitative or quantitative analysis of aflatoxins in solutions extracted from foodstuffs or feedstuffs are prepared from allylamine; methylene bisacrylamide (MBAA); acrylamide, ethyleneglycol-methacrylate phosphate (EGMP); 4-vinyl pyridine; or 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane-sulfonic acid (AMPSA) monomers. Preferred embodiments are polymers containing acrylamide moieties such as acrylamide and MBAA. The polymers are preferably cross-linked, for example using ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) or divinyl benzene (DVB), and macroporous.

## Claims

### Claim 1

Use of a polymer containing moieties derived from an acrylamide based monomer as an SPE adsorbent for aflatoxins.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

Use according to claim 1 in which the monomer is one or more of methylene bisacrylamide (MBBA), acrylamide or acrylamido-2-methylpropane-sulfonic acid (AMPSA), or a derivative thereof.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

Use according to claim 1 in which the acrylamide based monomer has been cross-linked by copolymerisation with a cross-linking monomer.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

Use according to claim 3 in which the cross-linker is ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) or divinyl benzene (DVB).

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

Use according to claim 3 in which the ratio of units of acrylamide monomer to crosslinker monomer is from 1:3 to 1:20.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

Use according to claim 1 in which the aflatoxins include one or more of aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

Use according to claim 1 in which the polymer and aflatoxin absorbed thereon is used as a sample in a fluorometric analysis method.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

Use according to claim 1 in which the absorbed aflatoxin is eluted from the polymer and used as a sample in a quantitative measurement method.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

Use according to claim 1 in which the polymer has been obtained by UV-polymerisation at a temperature below ambient.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

Use according to claim 1 in which the polymer has been rendered macroporous by removal of a porogen present during polymerisation.

### Claim 11

Use of a cross-linked polymer derived from methylene bisacrylamide (MBAA), allylamine, ethylene glycol methacrylate phosphate (EGMP), 4-vinyl pyridine or 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane-sulfonic acid (AMPSA) as an SPE adsorbent for aflatoxins.

### Claim 12

A fluorometric analysis method for aflatoxins which comprises adsorbing the aflatoxins on a polymer derived from an acrylamide based monomer loaded in or on a cuvette, cartridge, needle, membrane, rod or flat surface, exposing the immobilised aflatoxins to UV light and detecting the fluorescence emitted by the immobilised aflatoxin.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

Method according to claim 12 in which the aflatoxins include one or more of aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2.

### Claim 14

A clean-up method prior to quantitative measurement of aflatoxins, in which a sample liquid is contacted with a polymer derived from an acrylamide based monomer loaded in or on a cuvette, cartridge, rod, needle, membrane or flat surface to adsorb any aflatoxins that are present, and the aflatoxins are eluted from the polymer for quantitative measurement of any aflatoxins present.

### Claim 15

An SPE adsorbent unit comprising a cuvette, cartridge, needle, membrane, rod or flat surface loaded or coated with a layer of methylene bisacrylamide (MBBA) cross-linked with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as polymer adsorbent.

### Claim 16 (depends on 2)

Use according to claim 2 in which the acrylamide based monomer has been cross-linked by copolymerisation with a cross-linking monomer.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

Use according to claim 16 in which the cross-linker is ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) or divinyl benzene (DVB).

### Claim 18 (depends on 4)

Use according to claim 4 in which the ratio of units of acrylamide monomer to crosslinker monomer is from 1:3 to 1:20.

### Claim 19 (depends on 16)

Use according to claim 16 in which the ratio of units of acrylamide monomer to crosslinker monomer is from 1:3 to 1:20.

### Claim 20 (depends on 17)

Use according to claim 17 in which the ratio of units of acrylamide monomer to crosslinker monomer is from 1:3 to 1:20.
