## Abstract

A rechargeable battery includes an electrode assembly comprising a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a separator between the positive electrode and the negative electrode wound together and a case housing the electrode assembly, wherein the electrode assembly has an inner surface and an outer surface having a concave portion.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A rechargeable battery, comprising:
an electrode assembly comprising a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a separator between the positive electrode and the negative electrode wound together; and
a case housing the electrode assembly,
wherein the electrode assembly has an inner surface and an outer surface, the outer surface having a concave portion.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The rechargeable battery of claim 1, wherein the outer surface has a convex portion facing a first direction, and wherein the concave portion faces a second direction substantially opposite to the first direction.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The rechargeable battery of claim 1, wherein the electrode assembly is folded.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The rechargeable battery of claim 1, wherein the positive electrode includes a first coated portion coated with an active material and a first uncoated portion absent the active material and extending from the first coated portion in a third direction; and
wherein the negative electrode includes a second coated portion coated with an active material and a second uncoated portion absent the active material and extending from the second coated portion in a fourth direction substantially opposite to the third direction.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The rechargeable battery of claim 1, wherein the electrode assembly has a first end extending into a space defined by the concave portion.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The rechargeable battery of claim 1, wherein the electrode assembly has a first end and a second end facing the first end.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The rechargeable battery of claim 1, further comprising a support rod contacting the concave portion.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The rechargeable battery of claim 1, wherein the case has a cylindrical shape and wherein the inner surface is folded.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The rechargeable battery of claim 1, wherein the outer surface has a first portion and a second portion contacting each other at an interface.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The rechargeable battery of claim 1, wherein the electrode assembly has a C shape.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The rechargeable battery of claim 1, wherein the outer surface has a spiral shape.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The rechargeable battery of claim 1, wherein a first expansion space is defined by the concave surface of the outer surface and wherein a second expansion space is defined by the inner surface.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The rechargeable battery of claim 1, wherein the electrode assembly has an outer circumferential length greater than an outer circumferential length of the case.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The rechargeable battery of claim 1, wherein the outer surface is folded such that a first section of the outer surface contacts a second section of the outer surface.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The rechargeable battery of claim 14, wherein the case has a quadrangular shape.

### Claim 16 (depends on 1)

The rechargeable battery of claim 1, wherein the inner surface is in tension.

### Claim 17

A rechargeable battery, comprising:
an electrode assembly comprising a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a separator between the positive electrode and the negative electrode wound together; and
a case housing the electrode assembly, wherein the electrode assembly has an inner surface and an outer surface, the outer surface having a first portion and a second portion, wherein an expansion space is defined between the first portion and the second portion.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The rechargeable battery of claim 17, wherein the electrode assembly has a first end adjacent the expansion space.
