## Abstract

A print engine assembly includes an elongate chassis; a pair of bearing moldings operatively mounted to either end of the chassis; a rotatable platen supported by a rotary shaft extending between and mounted in the pair of bearing moldings; and a printhead assembly mounted to the chassis, the printhead assembly including an elongated pagewidth printhead having a plurality of ink printing integrated circuits. The rotatable platen includes an extruded material shaped to define a cavity in which a blotting material is disposed, and the rotatable platen defines an aperture extending along a length thereof through which aperture the blotting material is exposed.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A print engine assembly comprising:
an elongate chassis;
a pair of bearing moldings operatively mounted to either end of the chassis;
a rotatable platen supported by a rotary shaft extending between and mounted in the pair of bearing moldings; and
a printhead assembly mounted to the chassis, the printhead assembly including an elongated pagewidth printhead having a plurality of ink printing integrated circuits, wherein
the rotatable platen includes an extruded material shaped to define a cavity in which a blotting material is disposed, and the rotatable platen defines an aperture extending along a length thereof through which aperture the blotting material is exposed.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

A print engine assembly as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a feed mechanism mounted to the bearing moldings, and configured to feed print media beneath the printhead during printing.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

A print engine assembly as claimed in claim 2, further comprising two pairs of rails arranged on the chassis, to which rails each bearing molding is respectively movably mounted.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 3, wherein the extruded material of the rotatable platen is further shaped to have a first flat surface extending longitudinally along a length thereof, the first flat surface serving as a support surface for print media.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 4, wherein the rotatable platen further includes a second flat surface extending longitudinally along a length thereof, and a capping member attached to the second flat surface.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 5, wherein the first flat surface, the second flat surface, and the aperture are generally concentric with a longitudinal axis of the rotary shaft, and the first flat surface, the second flat surface, and the aperture are separated from each other by an angle of 120°.

### Claim 7 (depends on 3)

The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 3, wherein the feed mechanism comprises a plurality of rollers mounted between the bearing moldings.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 7, further comprising an external motor mounted to one of the bearing moldings and operatively coupled to at least one of the rollers.

### Claim 9 (depends on 3)

The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 3, wherein the chassis is generally U-shaped, facilitating mounting of the bearing moldings to the chassis.

### Claim 10 (depends on 3)

The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 3, which includes a pair of spacers operatively arranged with respect to the printhead assembly and the chassis, to adjust an effective length of the printhead assembly.

### Claim 11 (depends on 3)

The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 3, further comprising a pair of biasing springs each extending from respective bearing moldings and into respective retention formations defined by the chassis, to bias the platen into a raised position with respect to the printhead.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 11, wherein the platen includes cams provided at each end of the platen to engage projections on each of a pair of spacers, the pair of spacers provided at each end of the printhead assembly.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 12, including a motor able to effect movement of the platen away from the printhead along the rails and then rotation of the platen.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 13, wherein the platen rotates to a position corresponding to one of the longitudinally extending surface regions being opposite the printhead and then the platen is moved towards the printhead by action of biasing springs.
