Abstract
An apparatus, method and system for the treatment and management of spinal defects and inserting a spinal implant into an implantation space is described. The system may include a slotted implant, a distractor and an inserter and be employed in posterior lumbar or thoracic surgery.
Claims13
A system for implanting a spinal insert, comprising:
- a central body having a substantially longitudinal axis;
- a first portion extending from the central body and having a first surface adapted to engage a contacting surface and a first slot partially defined in the first surface, the first slot having a width and a length substantially longer than the width, the length extends substantially axially and is positioned offset from the longitudinal axis, the first slot being substantially rectangular in shape;
- a second portion extending from the central body and having a second surface adapted to engage a contacting surface and a second slot partially defined in the second surface, the second slot having a width and a length substantially longer than the width, the length extends substantially axially and is positioned offset from the longitudinal axis, the second slot being substantially rectangular in shape;
- the first slot is substantially parallel to the second slot;
- a first surgical tool removably coupled to at least one of the first slot and the second slot;
- a third portion extending from the central body and having a third surface that is substantially flat;
- a fourth portion extending from the central body and having a fourth surface that is substantially flat;
- a fifth portion extending from the central body and having a fifth surface that is substantially flat with at least one receiving hole;
- a second surgical tool removably coupled to the at least one receiving hole;
- and
- a sixth portion extending from the central body and having a sixth surface that is substantially curved;
- wherein the at least one of the first slot and the second slot, and the receiving hole are designed and oriented to facilitate posterior implantation of the spinal insert.
