Abstract

A biopsy device comprises a targeting set assembly, a probe assembly, and a holster assembly, which are detachable from one another. The targeting set assembly comprises a needle assembly having a tissue piercing tip, a tissue receiving aperture, and a fluid sealing mechanism. The probe assembly comprises a tissue cutter and an internal helix mechanism. The internal helix mechanism may fully retract the cutter within the probe assembly to prevent exposure to the sharp distal end of the cutter when the probe assembly is detached from the needle assembly. When the probe assembly and needle assembly are connected, the internal helix mechanism may extend the cutter into the needle to facilitate biopsy of a tissue sample. The helix may have variable pitch for providing a first translational speed for cutting with the cutter and a second translational speed for cutter retraction.

Dependent claims

A biopsy probe for use with a detachable needle, wherein the biopsy probe comprises:

(a) a body comprising a distal portion and proximal portion;
(b) a cutter comprising:
(i) a sharp distal end operable to sever tissue, and
(ii) a restricting member extending along a portion of the cutter to selectively restrict rotation of the cutter,
wherein the cutter is operable to fully retract within the body to prevent exposure of the sharp distal end of the cutter;
(c) a cutter positioning member, wherein the cutter positioning member is rotatable within the body;
and
(d) a first engagement member engaged with the cutter positioning member, wherein the first engagement member is further engaged with the cutter, wherein the cutter positioning member is operable to translate the cutter along a first longitudinal range of motion via the first engagement member and rotate the cutter along a second longitudinal range of motion via the first engagement member.

A biopsy probe for use with a detachable needle, wherein the biopsy probe comprises:

(a) a probe body;
(b) a cutter operable to sever tissue, wherein the cutter is partially retracted within the probe body and is operable to translate relative to the probe body and rotate about a longitudinal axis;
(c) a first drive member having a length and defining a groove, wherein the groove has a helical section along a first portion of the length of the first drive member, wherein the first drive member is rotatable within the probe body;
(d) a first rotation member associated with the drive member, wherein the first rotation member is configured to receive a rotational motion and communicate the rotational motion to the drive member;
(e) a first support member associated with the first drive member and the cutter, wherein the first support member is unitarily secured to the cutter, wherein the first support member comprises a groove engagement feature positioned within the groove of the first drive member;
(f) a second drive member, wherein the second rotation member is fixed within the probe body;
and
(g) a second support member associated with the second drive member and the cutter, wherein the second support member is unitarily secured to the cutter, wherein rotation of the second support member within the second drive member causes simultaneous rotation and translation of the cutter.
