Abstract
A process for obtaining lipids containing highly unsaturated fatty acids from plant or animal material, including contacting the material with liquid dimethyl ether to give a dimethyl ether solution containing lipids and a residue of plant or animal material, separating the solution from the residue of plant or animal material, and recovering lipids from the solution.
Claims26
A process for obtaining lipids containing highly unsaturated fatty acids from marine animal, plant or micro-organism material, comprising:
- (i) contacting the material with liquid dimethyl ether to form (a) a dimethyl ether solution containing lipids, and (b) a residue of marine animal, plant or micro-organism material;
- (ii) separating the solution from the residue of marine animal, plant or micro-organism material;
- and
- (iii) recovering lipids, under subcritical pressure, from the dimethyl ether solution.
