Abstract
Methods of treating or inhibiting ischemia and reperfusion injury are provided.
Claims17
A method to treat reperfusion injury brought about by myocardial ischemia in a mammal, comprising:
- administering to the mammal, an effective amount of chloramphenicol or thiamphenicol wherein the administered chloramphenicol or thiamphenicol substantially reduces the amount of infarcted tissue.
A method to treat reperfusion injury brought about by myocardial ischemia in a mammalian donor organ, comprising:
- contacting the donor organ with an effective amount of chloramphenicol or thiamphenicol, wherein the chloramphenicol or thiamphenicol inhibits one or more cytochrome P450 enzymes, and wherein the donor organ is a heart.
A method to treat reperfusion injury brought about by myocardial ischemia in a mammal comprising administering to the mammal, an effective amount of chloramphenicol or thiamphenicol suitable to substantially permit mitochondrial respiration while reducing superoxide production.
