1-19. (canceled)
A method of identifying a candidate compound for treating or preventing microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus (DM), the method comprising:
- (a) providing a population of cells capable of expressing Src homology 2 domain-containing tyrosine phosphatase 1 (SHP-1);
- (b) contacting the cells with a test compound;
- and
- (c) evaluating levels or activity of SHP-1 in the cells, in the presence and absence of the test compound, wherein a test compound that alters the level or activity of SHP-1 in the cells is a candidate compound for treating or preventing microvascular complications of DM.
A method of treating a subject who has or is at risk of developing a disorder associated with microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus, the method comprising administering a therapeutically effective amount of an inhibitor of SHP-1 to a subject in need thereof, thereby treating the disorder in the subject.
