Abstract
An improved electrosurgical scalpel, with light emission, for generating electrical signals intended for applications to the body of a patient via an electrosurgical electrode is provided. An electrosurgical scalpel includes a handle with a receptacle portion of a conductive member for mounting and retaining an electrode blade, a light source with a power source encapsulated within the handle and a means to direct the light emitted outwardly towards the electrode tip. Operation of a switch on the handle to an on position serves to complete a circuit, activating the light source and, thereby directing light through an opening or upper portion and out from the first end of the handle towards the distal end of the electrode blade.
Claims6
An electrosurgical instrument for selectively providing electrical energy to an electrode blade for cutting, coagulation and the like, comprising:
- a. A housing;
- b. An electrode blade mounting means, incorporated into the first end of the housing, being electrically connected to a means for conducting electricity via selector members, operatively moving the selector members as desired by an operator to electrically interconnect the electrode blade, the means for conducting electricity and the electrosurgical signal generator means, as desired by the operator for cutting or coagulation;
- and
- c. A light emitting source mounted within the housing, comprising one or more light emitting elements, and structured and disposed to direct light through and outwardly from said first end, a light power source encapsulated within interior of said housing for supplying electrical power to energize said light emitting source, electrically connected to said light emitting source via a switch member, operatively moving the switch member as desired by an operator to electrically interconnect the light source, the light power source and the means for conducting electricity.
- d. Conductor means encapsulated within said housing electrically connecting said light power source with said light source and defining a circuit, and
- e. A switch means on said housing, said switch means being electrically connected to said conductor means and operable between an open circuit position to de-energize said light source and a closed circuit position, closing said circuit and supplying electrical power from said light power source to said light source to energize said light source, causing light emitted therefrom to be transmitted out from said first end towards the distal end of said electrode.
An electrosurgical instrument for selectively providing electrical energy to an electrode blade for cutting, coagulation and the like, comprising:
- a. A housing including a first end, with some portion of said first end being formed of a light conductive material structured and disposed to transmit light therefrom;
- b. An electrode blade mounting means, incorporated into the first end of the housing, being electrically connected to the means for conducting electricity via selector members, operatively moving the selector members as desired by an operator to electrically interconnect the electrode blade, the means for conducting electricity and the electrosurgical signal generator means, as desired by the operator for cutting or coagulation;
- and
- c. A light emitting source mounted within the housing, comprising one or more light emitting elements, and structured and disposed to direct light through and outwardly from said first end, a light power source encapsulated within interior of said housing for supplying electrical power to energize said light emitting source, electrically connected to said light emitting device via a switch member, operatively moving the switch member as desired by an operator to electrically interconnect the light source, the light power source and the means for conducting electricity.
- d. Conductor means encapsulated within said housing electrically connecting said light power source with said light source and defining a circuit, and
- e. Switch means on said housing said switch means being electrically connected to said conductor means and operable between an open circuit position to de-energize said light source and a closed circuit position, closing said circuit and supplying electrical power from said light power source to said light source to energize said light source, causing light emitted therefrom to be transmitted through said light conductive material and out from said first end towards said distal end of said electrode.

- and
- c. A light emitting source mounted within the housing, comprising one or more light emitting elements, and structured and disposed to direct light through and outwardly from said first end, a connection port mounted within the housing connecting to an external light power source for supplying electrical power to energize said light emitting source, electrically connected to said light emitting source via a switch member, operatively moving the switch member as desired by an operator to electrically interconnect the light source, the external light power source and the means for conducting electricity.
- d. Conductor means encapsulated within said housing electrically connecting said external light power source through connection port with said light source and defining a circuit, and
- e. Switch means on said housing, said switch means being electrically connected to said conductor means and operable between an open circuit position to de-energize said light source and a closed circuit position, closing said circuit and supplying electrical power from said light power source to said light source to energize said light source, causing light emitted therefrom to be transmitted out from said first end towards the distal end of said electrode.
