Abstract
A variety of curing agents for epoxy resins and methods for preparation thereof are disclosed, including compounds having the structures of formulas III and IV: wherein each of R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5 is independently selected from the group consisting of H, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, iso-propyl, a butyl, and phenyl. Epoxy-based compositions including various curing agents are also disclosed. Other epoxy curatives containing amino, phenol, and/or imine groups are disclosed.

A compound selected from the group consisting of compounds having the structures of formulas III, IV, V, VI, VII, XV and XVI:
- wherein:
- in each of compounds III, IV and V, each of R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5 is independently selected from the group consisting of H, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, iso-propyl, a butyl, and phenyl;
- in compound XV, R1 is selected from the group consisting of H and a lower alkyl;
- and each of R2 and R3 is independently selected from the group consisting of Cl, Br, F, and a lower alkyl;
- and
- in compound XVI, Z2 is selected from the group consisting of H and NH2;
- and each of R1, R2, and R3 is independently selected from the group consisting of H and a lower alkyl.

A method for preparing a compound X selected from the group consisting of:
- the method comprising:
- (a) reacting a sterically hindered substituted phenol with 4-nitrobenzyl to yield an intermediate compound comprising a phenol moiety connected via the methylene bridge to nitrobenzol moiety;
- and
- (b) hydrogenating the intermediate compound, to thereby obtain compound X.
A method for preparing a compound Y selected from the group consisting of:
- the method comprising:
- (a) reacting a phenol bearing one or more nitro substituents with a mono- or di-acid halide functional compound to yield an intermediate phenyl-ester-bridged compound;
- and
- (b) hydrogenating the intermediate phenyl-ester-bridged compound, to thereby obtain compound Y.
A method for preparing a compound Z selected from the group consisting of:
- the method comprising:
- (a) obtaining an intermediate phenyl-ester-bridged compound by conducting a reaction selected from the group consisting of:
- (i) a reaction of a nitro-substituted benzoyl chloride and bisphenol;
- and
- (ii) condensation of a nitro-substituted benzoic acid and bisphenol;
- and
- (b) hydrogenating the intermediate phenyl-ester-bridged compound, to thereby obtain compound of claim Z.
