Abstract
The present application features methods and compositions for treating patients suffering from atherosclerosis or at risk for developing atherosclerosis. The treatment includes administering to the patient a pharmaceutical composition that includes an agent capable of blocking the interaction between uPA and its receptor uPAR, e.g., an ATF or a fragment thereof, an anti-uPA antibody, a uPAR or a fragment thereof, or an antibody that specifically binds to uPAR.

An isolated polypeptide comprising a chimeric human ATF, wherein the receptor binding loop of a human ATF protein is replaced with a receptor binding loop of an ATF protein from a non-human species.
An isolated polypeptide consisting of a fragment of SEQ ID NO:8, wherein the fragment includes at least one human ATF binding site.

A method of treating atherosclerosis, the method comprising administering to a patient suffering from or at risk for atherosclerosis a therapeutically effective amount of a composition comprising a polypeptide comprising an ATF polypeptide.
A method of treating atherosclerosis, the method comprising administering to a patient suffering from or at risk for atherosclerosis a therapeutically effective amount of an antibody that specifically binds to human uPAR and blocks interaction between uPA and uPAR.
