Partial response receiver

A method of signaling between a transmitter and a receiver, the method comprising:

• receiving in the transmitter transmit data;
• equalizing the transmit data in the transmitter to generate an equalized signal;
• transmitting the equalized signal to the receiver, including a currently incoming symbol;
• and
• applying partial response compensation to the equalized signal using at least in part a predetermined set of one or more data values transmitted most recently relative to the currently incoming symbol;
• wherein equalizing the transmit data includes equalizing the currently incoming symbol to compensate for at least one other data value represented in the transmit data but not represented in the predetermined set.

A method of operating a signaling system including a transmitter circuit and a receiver circuit, the method comprising:

• transmitting data from the transmitter circuit;
• receiving the data at the receiver circuit;
• establishing partial response thresholds for comparison with the sampled data, the partial response thresholds based on prior sampled data;
• detecting errors in the received data;
• sending information from the receiver circuit to the transmitter circuit representing the detected errors;
• and
• applying transmit equalization to subsequent data based on the information.
