Abstract
A single carrier cable modem can be initialized on multiple channels. By initializing a cable modem on more than one channel, the error rate performance of short data packets in cable modems in an impulsive noise environment is improved. The advantage of low symbol rate transmission for short packets in an impulse noise environment is achieved without sacrificing burst capacity at a cable modem and without the complexity of transmitting multiple symbol waveforms simultaneously at a cable modem.

A method for transmitting data between a first modem and a second modem, comprising:
- (a) initializing the first modem on a first communication channel and a second communication channel to determine a first set of transmission parameters and a second set of transmission parameters, respectively;
- (b) receiving a first data packet for transmission at the first modem;
- (c) transmitting the first data packet to the second modem over the first communication channel using the first set of transmission parameters;
- (d) receiving a second data packet for transmission at the first modem;
- and
- (e) transmitting the second data packet to the second modem over the second communication channel using the second set of transmission parameters when the second communication channel is more suitable for transmission of the second data packet when compared to the first communication channel.
A method for transmitting data between a first modem and a second modem, comprising:
- (a) communicating a opportunity for the first modem to initialize on a first communication channel and a second communication channel to determine a first set of transmission parameters and a second set of transmission parameters, respectively;
- (b) receiving, by the second modem, a first data packet from the first modem over the first upstream communication channel, the first data packet being sent from the first modem using the first set of transmission parameters;
- (c) receiving, by the second modem, a second data packet from the first modem over the second communication channel when the second communication channel is more suitable for transmission of the second data packet when compared to the first communication channel, the second data packet being sent from the first modem using the second set of transmission parameters.
