Abstract
The invention relates, in particular, to a process for treating a liquid medium loaded with nitrates via a chemical route that mainly comprises a step of electrolysis of the liquid medium in the presence of a metal salt, the electrolysis being carried out at a pH below 5. The invention also relates to a device for treating a liquid medium loaded with nitrates and also to the applications of this process and device, in particular for reducing the level of nitrates in drainage waters.

A method for mixed chemical/electrochemical treatment of a liquid medium loaded with nitrates, comprising electrolyzing the liquid medium in the presence of a transition metal salt at a pH not exceeding 5.
A device for treating, via a mixed chemical/electrochemical route, a liquid medium loaded with nitrates, the device comprising:
- a source of a transition metal salt,
- a source for providing the liquid medium loaded with nitrates to be treated,
- means for mixing the transition metal salt with the liquid medium loaded with nitrates,
- an electrolysis enclosure receiving the metal salt/liquid medium mixture, and
- means for controlling pH of an electrolytic solution in the electrolysis enclosure to below 5.
