Abstract
A subterranean well tool is provided for sealing along a section of a wall of the well and is carried on a conduit into the well. The tool is designed to be comparatively short in length to afford easier mill or drill out subsequent to the tool's useful need in the well. A plurality of anchoring elements and seal means are provided for respective anchoring and sealing engagement along the wall of the well in concert and substantially concurrently with one another when the tool is shifted to the set position. The anchoring means are sandwiched in between first and second, or upper and lower, sets of seal means.
Claims13
1) A tool for sealing along a section of a wall of a subterranean well and carriable into said well on a conduit, and moveable from a run-in position to a set position by a setting tool manipulatable on said conduit, said well tool comprising:
- (1) a plurality of anchoring elements shiftable from a first retracted position when said well tool is in a run-in position to a second expanded position after manipulation of said setting tool;
- and
- (2) seal means carried around said anchoring elements for sealing engagement along the wall of the well in concert and substantially concurrently with the anchoring elements when the anchoring elements are shifted to the set position.
4) A tool for sealing along a section of a wall of a subterranean well and carriable into said well on a conduit, and moveable from a run-in position to a set position by a setting tool manipulatable on said conduit, said well tool comprising:
- (1) seal means for sealing engagement along the wall of the well;
- and
- (2) a plurality of anchoring elements sandwiched between said seal means and shiftable from a first retracted position when said well tool is in a run-in position to a second expanded position after manipulation of said setting tool.
5) A tool for sealing along a section of a wall of a subterranean well and carriable into said well on a conduit, and moveable from a run-in position to a set position by a setting tool manipulatable on said conduit, said well tool comprising:
- (1) seal means for sealing engagement along the wall of the well;
- and
- (2) a plurality of anchoring, elements sandwiched between said seal means and shiftable from a first retracted position when said well tool is in a run-in position to a second expanded position after manipulation of said setting tool, said seal means sealing against said well wall and said anchoring elements engaging said well wall substantially concurrently when the tool is moved to the set position.
6) A tool for sealing along a section of a wall of a subterranean well and carriable into said well on a conduit, and moveable from a run-in position to a set position by a setting tool manipulatable on said conduit, said well tool comprising:
- (1) a mandrel;
- (2) a plurality of slip elements radially disposed exteriorally around said mandrel and shiftable from a first retracted placement when said well tool is in a run-in position to a second expanded position after manipulation of said setting tool;
- and
- (3) seal means carried within and around said slip elements for sealing engagement along the wall of the well in concert with the slip elements as the slip elements are shifted to the expanded position.
11) A tool for sealing along a section of a wall of a subterranean well and carriable into said well on a conduit, and moveable from a run-in position to a set position by a setting tool manipulatable on said conduit, said well tool comprising:
- (1) a mandrel;
- (2) a plurality of slip elements radially disposed exteriorally around said mandrel and shiftable from a first retracted placement when said well tool is in a run-in position to a second expanded position after manipulation of said setting tool;
- (3) elastomeric seal means carried within and around said slip elements for sealing engagement along the wall of the well in concert with the slip elements as the slip elements are shifted to the expanded position;
- and
- (4) a passageway defined in and through said mandrel for transmission of an operating fluid subsequent to said tool being moved to the set position.
12) A tool for sealing along a section of a wall of a subterranean well and carriable into said well on a conduit including a setting tool, and moveable from a run-in position to a set position by a setting tool manipulatable on said conduit, said well tool comprising:
- (1) seal means for sealing engagement along the wall of the well;
- and
- (2) body members including anchoring elements, said seal means being contactingly positioned adjacent said body members, said tool being shiftable from a first retracted position when said well tool is in a run-in position to a second expanded position after manipulation of said setting tool, said seal means sealing against said well wall and said anchoring elements engaging said well wall substantially concurrently when the tool is moved to the set position.
