Abstract
A digital radio communication system (200) uses a repeater (216) to relay calls which can not be completed in a direct talk-around mode between two radios. The repeater (216) establishes early synchronization in advance of a pending call by listening to an originator radio (204) attempt to make a direct talk-around call to a target radio (210). Asynchronous digital two-way radio communication systems can benefit from the reduction in voice call connect time.
Claims20
An asynchronous digital two-way radio communication system comprising a repeater that relays calls which can not be completed in a direct talk-around mode by establishing early synchronization of the repeater in advance of a pending call.
A method of communicating in a digital communication system having an originator radio, a target radio and a repeater, comprising the steps of:
- sending synchronization information from the originator radio to the target radio to attempt to establish a call in direct talk-around mode;
- listening to the originator radio to acquire the synchronization information at the repeater;
- and
- immediately relaying the call to the target radio using the repeater when the attempt at direct talk-around mode was unsuccessful between the originator radio and the target radio.
A method of establishing a call in a digital communication system, comprising:
- initiating a call by sending preamble slots in uplink frequencies from an originator radio to a target radio;
- sending out a plurality of synchronization slots from the originator radio to the target radio;
- synchronizing the target radio using the preamble and synchronization slots when the target radio is within direct range of the originator;
- synchronizing a repeater to the originator radio using the preamble and synchronization slots;
- sending a repeater availability indicator back to the originator when a repeater is within range of the originator and is not engaged in another call;
- and
- establishing the call between the originator and the target via the synchronized repeater over a downlink when the target radio is not within direct range of the originator.
A method of establishing a call in a digital communication system, comprising:
- initiating a call from an originator radio to a target radio by transmitting both time and frequency synchronization information;
- synchronizing a repeater to the originator radio using the synchronization information when the repeater is within direct range of the originator and is not engaged in another call;
- and
- establishing the call between the originator and the target via the synchronized repeater when the target radio is not within direct range of the originator.
A method of establishing a call in a communication system, comprising:
- establishing early synchronization of a repeater in advance of a pending call;
- and
- relaying the pending call using the repeater when the pending call can not be completed in a direct talk-around mode, the communication system being an asynchronous digital two-way radio communication system.
