Abstract
The invention provides a series of compositions, methods, kits, articles and species associated primarily with the diagnosis and/or treatment of cell proliferation, specifically cancer. Cell proliferation associated with aberrant expression of MUC1 is particularly focused upon. Mechanisms associated with MUC1 cell proliferation are discussed.

An antibody or antigen-binding fragment thereof that specifically binds to MUC1 Growth Factor Receptor (MGFR).
A method comprising:
- providing peptide sequence comprising a portion of a cell surface receptor, in which an interchain binding region has been removed to the extent necessary to prevent self-aggregation of the peptide, wherein the peptide sequence interacts with an activating ligand to promote cell proliferation, wherein the primary sequence of said cell surface receptor consists of amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:7, at least 12 contiguous amino acids from the sequence residues 1110-1154 of SEQ ID NO:10, or at least 12 contiguous amino acids from the sequence residues 1110-1142 of SEQ ID NO:10;
- and generating a antibody or antigen-binding fragment thereof that specifically binds to the peptide.
A method of determining the aggressiveness and/or metastatic potential of a cancer comprising:
- contacting a sample obtained from a subject having or suspected of having the cancer with an antibody or antigen-binding fragment thereof that specifically binds to MUC1 Growth Factor Receptor (MGFR);
- and determining an amount of the antibody or antigen-binding fragment thereof that specifically binds to the sample, wherein the greater presence of the antibody or antigen-binding fragment thereof that specifically binds to MUC1 Growth Factor Receptor (MGFR) indicates greater aggressiveness and/or metastatic potential of the cancer.
A method for treating a subject having a cancer characterized by the aberrant expression of MUC1, comprising,
- administering to the subject a monovalent antibody or antigen-binding fragment thereof that specifically binds to MUC1 Growth Factor Receptor (MGFR) in an amount effective to ameliorate the cancer.
