Abstract
An electrode structure is disclosed for enhancing the brightness and/or efficiency of an LED. The electrode structure can have a metal electrode and an optically transmissive thick dielectric material formed intermediate the electrode and a light emitting semiconductor material. The electrode and the thick dielectric cooperate to reflect light from the semiconductor material back into the semiconductor so as to enhance the likelihood of the light ultimately being transmitted from the semiconductor material. Such LED can have enhanced utility and can be suitable for uses such as general illumination.
Claims11
A method for making an electrode structure, the method comprising:
- providing a semiconductor material that is configured to emit light about a central wavelength λ;
- forming a dielectric material formed upon the semiconductor material;
- forming at least one DBR pair formed upon the dielectric material;
- forming a portion of an electrode over both the dielectric material and the DBR pair(s);
- and
- forming another portion of the electrode in ohmic contact with the semiconductor material.
A method comprising:
- forming a portion of an electrode over both a dielectric material and at least one DBR pair;
- and
- forming another portion of the electrode in ohmic contact with a semiconductor material.
A device comprising:
- means for emitting light;
- means for providing current flow to the means for emitting light;
- means for providing electrical insulation formed upon the means for emitting light;
- at least one DBR pair formed upon the means for providing electrical insulation;
- and
- wherein a portion of the means for providing current flow is formed over both the means for providing electrical insulation and the DBR pair(s) and another portion of the means for providing current flow is in ohmic contact with the means for emitting light.
