Routing function calls to specific-function dynamic link libraries in a general-function environment

A computing system comprising a processor and a computer-readable memory unit coupled to said processor, said memory unit containing instructions that when executed by said processor implement a method of routing a function call to a core dynamic link library (DLL) via a pass-through DLL, said method comprising:

• receiving an indication that an application requires a specific functionality;
• subsequent to said receiving said indication, identifying a first core DLL as providing said specific functionality, wherein said identifying includes selecting said first core DLL from a plurality of core DLLs based on said indication, and wherein said identifying is performed by an initialization function internal to a pass-through DLL included in said computing system;
• subsequent to said identifying said first core DLL, loading said first core DLL into said memory unit;
• calling, by said pass-through DLL and subsequent to said loading said first core DLL, an internal processing initialization function included in said first core DLL;
• receiving and storing, by said pass-through DLL and in response to said calling said internal processing initialization function included in said first core DLL, an address of a list of pointers that reference a plurality of functions included in said first core DLL, wherein said plurality of functions includes a first function;
• receiving a function call to said first function by said pass-through DLL and from said application;
• calling said first function by said pass-through DLL, subsequent to said receiving and storing said address and in response to said receiving said function call, wherein said calling said first function includes utilizing said address to identify a pointer included in said list of pointers, and wherein said pointer references said first function in said plurality of functions;
• and
• executing said first function in response to calling said first function by said pass-through DLL.

A computer program product, comprising a computer-readable storage medium having a computer-readable program code stored therein, said computer-readable program code containing instructions configured to be executed by a processor of a computing system to implement a method of routing a function call to a core dynamic link library (DLL) via a pass-through DLL, said method comprising:

• receiving an indication that an application requires a specific functionality;
• subsequent to said receiving said indication, identifying a first core DLL as providing said specific functionality, wherein said identifying includes selecting said first core DLL from a plurality of core DLLs based on said indication, and wherein said identifying is performed by an initialization function internal to a pass-through DLL included in said computing system;
• subsequent to said identifying said first core DLL, loading said first core DLL into a memory unit coupled to said computing system;
• calling, by said pass-through DLL and subsequent to said loading said first core DLL, an internal processing initialization function included in said first core DLL;
• receiving and storing, by said pass-through DLL and in response to said calling said internal processing initialization function included in said first core DLL, an address of a list of pointers that reference a plurality of functions included in said first core DLL, wherein said plurality of functions includes a first function;
• receiving a function call to said first function by said pass-through DLL and from said application;
• calling said first function by said pass-through DLL, subsequent to said receiving and storing said address and in response to said receiving said function call, wherein said calling said first function includes utilizing said address to identify a pointer included in said list of pointers, and wherein said pointer references said first function in said plurality of functions;
• and
• executing said first function in response to calling said first function by said pass-through DLL.

A process for supporting computing infrastructure, said process comprising providing at least one support service for at least one of creating, integrating, hosting, maintaining, and deploying computer-readable code in a computing system, wherein the code in combination with the computing system is capable of performing a method of routing a function call to a core dynamic link library (DLL) via a pass-through DLL, said method comprising:

• receiving an indication that an application requires a specific functionality;
• subsequent to said receiving said indication, identifying a first core DLL as providing said specific functionality, wherein said identifying includes selecting said first core DLL from a plurality of core DLLs based on said indication, and wherein said identifying is performed by an initialization function internal to a pass-through DLL included in said computing system;
• subsequent to said identifying said first core DLL, loading said first core DLL into a memory unit coupled to said computing system;
• calling, by said pass-through DLL and subsequent to said loading said first core DLL, an internal processing initialization function included in said first core DLL;
• receiving and storing, by said pass-through DLL and in response to said calling said internal processing initialization function included in said first core DLL, an address of a list of pointers that reference a plurality of functions included in said first core DLL, wherein said plurality of functions includes a first function;
• receiving a function call to said first function by said pass-through DLL and from said application;
• calling said first function by said pass-through DLL, subsequent to said receiving and storing said address and in response to said receiving said function call, wherein said calling said first function includes utilizing said address to identify a pointer included in said list of pointers, and wherein said pointer references said first function in said plurality of functions;
• and
• executing said first function in response to calling said first function by said pass-through DLL.
