Abstract
An axial flux electrical machine is provided. The machine includes a plurality of rotors, each sandwiched between a respective pair of stator parts. The plurality of rotors, together with their respective stators, are axially-stacked to form a multistage machine. Heat exchangers are provided adjacent each stator to provide cooling. Each rotor disc is a composite rotor disc in which permanent magnets are embedded. The magnets are embedded in apertures through each disc so that surfaces of the magnets are flush with surfaces of the respective rotor disc.
Claims16
An axial-flux electrical machine comprising a rotor mounted adjacent at least one stator, the rotor being mounted on a rotatable member for rotation relative to the stator such that the rotor and stator form a rotor-stator module of the machine, the rotor being mounted on the rotatable member, wherein the stator carries windings of an electrical conductor thereon and includes two stator portions, and the rotor is mounted between the two stator portions for rotation relative thereto;
- and wherein the axial-flux electrical machine includes a cooling structure that contacts each stator portion, the cooling structure including channels therein for conveying a coolant fluid therethrough.
A wheel for a vehicle comprising:
- a rotor mounted adjacent at least one stator, the rotor being mounted on a rotatable member for rotation relative to the stator such that the rotor and stator form a rotor-stator module of the machine, the rotor being mounted on the rotatable member, wherein the stator carries windings of an electrical conductor thereon and includes two stator portions, and the rotor is mounted between the two stator portions for rotation relative thereto;
- and wherein the axial-flux electrical machine includes a cooling structure that contacts each stator portion, the cooling structure including channels therein for conveying a coolant fluid therethrough;
- wherein one of the rotor and the stator is coupled to the wheel and the other of the rotor and the stator is arranged for fixing to structure of the vehicle such that the electrical machine may be used as a direct drive motor in rotating the wheel and thereby driving the vehicle.
A vehicle comprising:
- at least one wheel coupled to the vehicle;
- an electrical machine comprising:
- a rotor mounted adjacent at least one stator, the rotor being mounted on a rotatable member for rotation relative to the stator such that the rotor and stator form a rotor-stator module of the machine, the rotor being mounted on the rotatable member, wherein the stator carries windings of an electrical conductor thereon and includes two stator portions, and the rotor is mounted between the two stator portions for rotation relative thereto;
- and wherein the axial-flux electrical machine includes a cooling structure that contacts each stator portion, the cooling structure including channels therein for conveying a coolant fluid therethrough;
- wherein one of the rotor and the stator is coupled to the at least one wheel and the other of the rotor and the stator is arranged for fixing to structure of the vehicle such that the electrical machine may be used as a direct drive motor in rotating the at least one wheel and thereby driving the vehicle.
