Abstract
A bone screw includes an elongate shaft extending longitudinally between a proximal end and an opposing distal end, the shaft bounding a first passageway at least partially extending between the proximal end and the distal end, the shaft being comprised of a radiolucent material. A core is disposed within the first passageway of the shaft, the core being comprised of a radiopaque material. A rounded head or a substantially U-shaped collar is either integrally formed with or is rigidly attached to the proximal end of the shaft.
Claims35
A bone screw comprising:
- an elongate shaft extending longitudinally between a proximal end and an opposing distal end, the shaft bounding a first passageway at least partially extending between the proximal end and the distal end, the shaft being comprised of a radiolucent material;
- and
- a core disposed within the first passageway of the shaft, the core being comprised of a radiopaque material.
A polyaxial screw comprising:
- a bone screw comprising:
- an elongate shaft extending longitudinally between a proximal end and an opposing distal end, the shaft comprising an exterior surface having a radially outwardly projecting helical thread formed thereon;
- and
- a head secured to the proximal end of the shaft, the head and shaft being comprised of two separate and distinct parts that are secured together;
- and
- a collar pivotably mounted on the head of the screw.
A polyaxial screw comprising:
- a bone screw comprising a head having an elongated shaft projecting therefrom, the shaft having an exterior surface with a helical thread formed thereon and an interior surface bounding a first passageway that centrally extends along the length of the shaft, an elongated core being disposed within the first passageway, the core being comprised of a radiopaque material while the shaft is comprised of a radiolucent material;
- and
- a collar pivotably mounted on the head of the bone screw.
A method of manufacturing a bone screw, the method comprising:
- forming an elongated shaft about a core, the shaft having a longitudinal axis extending between a proximal end and an opposing distal end, the core extending along the longitudinal axis, the shaft being comprised of a radiolucent material and the core being comprised of a radiopaque material;
- and
- forming a helical thread on an exterior surface of the shaft.
