Abstract
A coating composition comprising a silylated polyvinyl alcohol, a colloidal silica and a water-dispersible or water-soluble aminoplast resin in an aqueous vehicle may be coated on a substrate with a layer of an inorganic compound to form a gas barrier lamella.

A coating composition comprising a silylated polyvinyl alcohol, a colloidal silica and a water-dispersible or water-soluble aminoplast resin in an aqueous vehicle.
A gas barrier lamella comprising a flexible plastics film coated with a first coating comprising an inorganic compound and a second coating comprising a silylated polyvinyl alcohol having dispersed therethrough a water-dispersible or water-soluble aminoplast resin and a particulate silica having a maximum cross-sectional dimension of 100 nm.
