Extended Signaling System and Method

An apparatus for providing current through a telephone line, the apparatus comprising:

• a power source with low equivalence resistant toward direct current (DC) for providing a power signal comprising (DC);
• a low pass filter circuit, connected to the power source, for filtering the power signal to attenuate alternating current (AC) signals;
• a bus, connected to the low pass filter, for combining the power signal with other signals;
• a signal transceiver and controller circuit for generating a first carrier signal encoding data received from an auxiliary device and for receiving a second carrier signal encoding data that is transmitted to the auxiliary device;
• a high pass filter circuit, connected to the signal transceiver and the bus, for attenuating signals at voice frequencies;
• a coupler circuit for coupling signals at voice frequencies and attenuating signals at frequencies outside of voice frequencies;
• and
• a hookswitch controller, connected to the signal transceiver.

An apparatus for receiving signals through a telephone line, the apparatus comprising:

• a low pass filter circuit, connected to a telephone line, for filtering a power signal comprising direct current (DC) transmitted over the telephone line, wherein the low pass filter attenuates alternating current (AC) signals and provides a low equivalence resistance toward the DC;
• a power supply connected to the low pass filter, wherein the output of the low pass filter is connected to an input of the power supply, the power supply comprising output terminals for powering an auxiliary device;
• a high pass filter circuit, connected to the telephone line, for removing DC and attenuating signals at voice frequencies;
• and
• a signal transceiver and controller circuit, connected to the high pass filter circuit, for generating a first carrier signal encoding data received from the auxiliary device and for receiving a second carrier signal encoding data transmitted to the auxiliary device.
