Abstract
An endovascular laser treatment device designed to be used with an optical fiber to treat venous diseases such as varicose veins is provided. The device includes a expandable separator that positions the distal end of the optical fiber away from the inner wall of the blood vessel during delivery of laser energy to provide an even distribution of thermal energy around the vessel, thereby avoiding vessel perforation and incomplete vessel collapse.
Claims12
An endovascular laser treatment device for treating a varicose vein comprising:
- an optical fiber adapted to be inserted into a diseased vein;
- an expandable separator arranged near a distal end of the optical fiber and adapted to be expanded within a vein into a deployed state so as to separate the distal end of the optical fiber from the inner wall of the diseased vein, the expanded separator sized to longitudinally move across the diseased vein.
A method for endovascular laser treatment of a varicose vein comprising:
- inserting an optical fiber into a diseased vein;
- expanding a separator arranged near a distal end of the optical fiber into a deployed state so as to separate the distal end of the optical fiber from the inner wall of the diseased vein;
- and
- longitudinally moving the expanded separator and optical fiber through the diseased vein.
