## Claims

### Claim at position 1

-13. (canceled)

### Claim 14

An animal lead comprising: a cushioning element for absorbing jolts; and a protective sleeve that surrounds the cushioning element.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

An animal lead as claimed in claim 14; wherein the protective sleeve is in the form of a chewing band of flexible, bite-resistant material.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

An animal lead as claimed in claim 15; wherein the chewing band is made of braided stretchable plastic material.

### Claim 17 (depends on 14)

An animal lead as claimed in claim 14; wherein the cushioning element is made of resiliently deformable material.

### Claim 18 (depends on 14)

An animal lead as claimed in claim 14; wherein the cushioning element is elastically stretchable from a relaxed condition to a stretched condition and is surrounded by the protective sleeve when in the relaxed condition.

### Claim 19 (depends on 14)

An animal lead as claimed in claim 14; wherein the protective sleeve is releasably connected at one end thereof to the cushioning element.

### Claim 20 (depends on 14)

An animal lead as claimed in claim 14; wherein the cushioning element is in the form of a rubber bar.

### Claim 21 (depends on 20)

An animal lead as claimed in claim 20; including attachment lugs fixed to ends of the rubber bar, and connection elements connected to respective ones of the attachment lugs.

### Claim 22 (depends on 21)

An animal lead as claimed in claim 21; including eye formations in the form of shackles, which each connect one of the connection elements to a different one of the lugs.

### Claim 23 (depends on 21)

An animal lead as claimed in claim 21; wherein the connection elements comprise snap hooks.

### Claim 24 (depends on 14)

An animal lead as claimed in claim 14; wherein the cushioning element and the protective sleeve have eye formations in the form of loops at their ends.

### Claim 25 (depends on 14)

An animal lead as claimed in claim 14; further including a retractable lead retainer configured so that the cushioning element and the protective sleeve are received within the retainer when retracted.

### Claim 26 (depends on 14)

An animal lead as claimed in claim 14; wherein the animal lead is in the form of an animal collar.

### Claim 27

An animal lead comprising: an elongate cushioning element that is elastically stretchable in the lengthwise direction thereof to absorb jolts exerted thereon during use of the animal lead and that is attachable at one end to an animal and attachable at the other end to a longer lead; and a protective sleeve that completely encircles the cushioning element at least when the cushioning element is in a non-stretched condition.

### Claim 28 (depends on 27)

An animal lead according to claim 27; wherein the protective sleeve is made of bite-resistant chewing material.

### Claim 29 (depends on 28)

An animal lead according to claim 28; wherein the chewing material is braided.

### Claim 30 (depends on 27)

An animal lead according to claim 27; wherein the cushioning element comprises a rubber bar.

### Claim 31 (depends on 30)

An animal lead according to claim 30; including attachment lugs connected, respectively, to opposite ends of the rubber bar, and a connection element connected to each attachment lug.

### Claim 32 (depends on 27)

An animal lead according to claim 27; further including a retractable lead retainer which retains therein the cushioning element and the protective sleeve and from which the cushioning element and the protective sleeve can be withdrawn.

### Claim 33 (depends on 27)

An animal lead according to claim 27; wherein 1; wherein the cushioning element and the protective sleeve are configured in the shape of a collar to be worn around the neck of an animal.
