Abstract
A porous insert for a gearbox or transmission which retards fluid motion and flow within the device when it is subjected to rapid acceleration. The insert may be fabricated of any porous material such as open cell plastic foam, a porous ceramic or sintered metal and is shaped to conform to and is installed in a bottom rear region of the transmission housing. The insert retards motion of the fluid during rapid acceleration, preventing pump starvation and permitting a smaller charge of fluid to be placed in the gearbox or transmission.
Claims19
A fluid motion control device for a transmission comprising, in combination,
- a porous insert shaped to fit inside a transmission housing and extend between spaced-apart sidewalls to define a space between said insert and an oil pan, said insert fabricated of a shape retaining material compatible with fluid disposed in said transmission housing,
- whereby said insert retards fluid motion in said transmission during acceleration.
A fluid motion control device for an automatic transmission comprising, in combination,
- a permeable insert shaped to conform to an inside rear portion of a transmission housing, said insert fabricated of a shape retaining material compatible with fluid disposed in said transmission housing and having a nominal pore size between 0.005 inches and 0.06 inches.
A device for retarding fluid motion in an automatic transmission comprising, in combination,
- a porous insert conforming to an inside rear portion of an automatic transmission housing and defining a space between said insert and an oil pan of said transmission, said insert fabricated of a shape retaining material compatible with fluid disposed in said transmission housing,
- whereby said insert retards a flow of fluid to the rear of the transmission during acceleration.
