Abstract
Device for cleaning crankcase gases from an internal combustion engine by means of a centrifugal separator (14), comprising a housing (16) with a rotor (22), which is rotatably supported in the housing and has a plurality of tightly separated separating discs (20). The housing (16) has an interface surface, which is designed for direct mounting of the housing (16) over a corresponding opening in a valve cover of the internal combustion engine.
Claims21
A device for cleaning crankcase gases from an internal combustion engine, the device comprising:
- a housing;
- a rotor rotatably mounted in the housing and having a plurality of tightly separated separating discs which define a central gas flow shaft in fluid communication with a gas inlet chamber which communicates with intervening spaces between the disc elements and with a cavity around the rotor defined by the housing;
- and
- a drive device to rotate the rotor;
- wherein the housing defines an inlet in the housing for crankcase gas, a gas outlet in the housing for cleaned crankcase gas, and an oil outlet in the housing for separated oil, and
- wherein the housing has an interface surface to be directly mounted to a valve cover of the internal combustion engine, such that the inlet in the housing has a downstream opening, which communicates with the gas inlet chamber, and an upstream opening, which is situated in the interface surface and which by way of an opening in the valve cover communicates directly with the crankcase gas in a space defined by the valve cover.
An apparatus for cleaning crankcase gases from an internal combustion engine, the engine including a crankcase and a valve cover, with the valve cover defining a crankcase gas passage that is in fluid communication with the crankcase, the apparatus comprising:
- a housing defining a cavity in fluid communication with a further crankcase gas passage defined by the housing and extending to an interface surface, the cavity in fluid communication with an oil return passage defined by the housing, the cavity in fluid communication with a cleaned gas passage defined by the housing, wherein the interface surface is to directly mount to the valve cover to put the further crankcase gas passage into fluid communication with the crankcase via the crankcase gas passage;
- a rotor rotatably mounted inside the cavity, the rotor including a plurality of spaced apart separating discs which define a central gas flow shaft that defines a gas inlet chamber that is in fluid communication with intervening spaces between the separating discs, with the cavity and with the further crankcase gas passage;
- and
- a drive device coupled to the rotor to rotate the rotor.
An system, comprising:
- an internal combustion engine, comprising:
- a crankcase;
- and
- a valve cover coupled to the crankcase, with the valve cover defining a crankcase gas passage that is in fluid communication with the crankcase, an oil passage in fluid communication with an oil system of the engine and an intake passage in fluid communication with an intake of the engine,
- a housing defining a cavity in fluid communication with a further crankcase gas passage defined by the housing and extending to an interface surface, the housing defining an oil return passage extending from the cavity to the interface surface, the housing defining a cleaned gas passage extending from the cavity to the interface surface, the interface surface to directly mount to the valve cover to put the further crankcase gas passage into fluid communication with the crankcase gas passage, to put the oil return passage into fluid communication with the oil passage and to put the cleaned gas passage into fluid communication with the intake passage;
- a rotor rotatably mounted inside the cavity, the rotor including a plurality of spaced apart separating discs which define a central gas flow shaft that defines a gas inlet chamber that is in fluid communication with intervening spaces between the separating discs, the cavity and the crankcase gas passage;
- a wall disposed between the rotor and the housing, with a further cavity extending between the wall and the housing, the further cavity in fluid communication with the cleaned gas passage;
- and
- a drive device coupled to the rotor to rotate the rotor.
