Abstract
Liquid aluminum is sprayed as a fine mist onto an alloyed iron article to produce a thin tenacious non-corrodible layer. In some embodiments, air is heated and delivered through insulated tubing to a container having solid aluminum therein. In some embodiments the air is heated by an electric induction coil. In some embodiments, the container is heated independently of the heated air. In some embodiments, the container is heated by an electric induction coil.
Claims22
A method of applying a thin aluminum layer to an alloyed iron article, comprising
- heating air and delivering the heated air through tubing to a compartment having solid aluminum therein;
- melting the solid aluminum in the compartment;
- and
- projecting the heated air and an aluminum mist through an outlet from the container onto an alloyed iron article.
Apparatus for spraying an aluminum layer onto an article, comprising
- a compartment for receiving a quantity of solid aluminum and having an outlet;
- and
- an air heating assembly including
- a compressor having an inlet open to the earth's atmosphere and an outlet adapted for delivering high pressure air;
- a dryer and a heater adapted for receiving air from the compressor outlet;
- and
- insulated tubing connecting the dryer and the compartment for delivering hot dried air into the compartment whereby aluminum is melted in the compartment, atomized by hot air from the heater and sprayed out of the compartment outlet.
Apparatus for spraying an aluminum layer onto an article, comprising
- means for receiving a quantity of solid aluminum and for melting the aluminum therein and having an outlet adapted for discharging a mist of liquid aluminum;
- and
- an air heating assembly including a compressor having an inlet open to the earth's atmosphere and an outlet delivering high pressure air;
- means for drying air delivered from the compressor outlet;
- means for heating air from the compressor outlet;
- and insulated tubing in communication with the drying means and the heating means for delivering hot dry air to the compartment for spraying a mist of liquid aluminum toward the article.
A pipe having an inner tube comprising an iron alloy and having an outer tube comprising aluminum, wherein said outer tube is bonded to said inner tube by spraying an aluminum mist onto the outer diameter of said inner tube.
