Abstract
Disclosed is a method for producing cardiomyocytes in vivo by administering to the heart of an individual a cardiomyocyte producing amount of mesenchymal stem cells. These cells can be administered as a liquid injectable or as a preparation of cells in a matrix which is or becomes solid or semi-solid. The cells can be genetically modified to enhance myocardial differentiation and integration. Also disclosed is a method for replacing cells ex vivo in a heart valve for implantation.
Claims39
A method for producing cardiomyocytes in a heart of an individual, comprising:
- administering intravenously to said individual a cardiomyocyte producing amount of mesenchymal stem cells in about 20 μl and up to about 150 μl of a suspension containing 10 to 40×106 mesenchymal stem cells/ml, wherein said administered mesenchymal stem cells differentiate into cardiomyocytes in the heart of said individual.
A method of repairing or regenerating blood vessels of the heart of an individual, comprising:
- administering to said individual mesenchymal stem cells in an amount effective to repair or regenerate blood vessels in the heart of said individual.
A method of stimulating or promoting angiogenesis in the heart of an individual, comprising:
- administering to said individual mesenchymal stem cells in an amount effective to stimulate or promote angiogenesis in the heart of said individual.
A process for treating cardiac ischemia in a patient, comprising:
- administering to said patient human mesenchymal cells in an amount effective to treat cardiac ischemia in said patient such that said cardiac ischemia is treated.
A process for regenerating cardiac muscle in a patient in need of treatment for ischemic congestive heart failure, comprising:
- administering to said patient human mesenchymal cells in an amount effective to treat cardiac ischemia in said patient such that cardiac muscle is regenerated as treatment for ischemic congestive heart failure in said patient.
A method for treating a patient with myocardial infarction comprising:
- administering to said patient human mesenchymal stem cells in an amount effective to improve cardiac function following myocardial infarction.
