Abstract
A cutting tool having an outer surface with a plurality of inserts connected to a distinct pocket extending generally radially on the outer surface. The cutting inserts are arranged in a helical array on the outer surface in a manner that at least one cutting edge of each cutting insert is spaced in an angular circumferential direction from the pocket of the next adjacent cutting insert. The spacing of the inserts is such that a distinct point on the each one of the one or more cutting edges define part of a layout line having a non-uniform slope.
Claims24
A helical milling cutter comprising:
- an outer surface;
- a plurality of pockets formed on and arranged in a helical array along the outer surface and spaced in an angular circumferential direction from an adjacent pocket;
- and
- a layout line defined by a distinct point that is the same point on each of the pockets, the layout line having a nonuniform slope beyond the first row.
A helical milling cutter comprising:
- an outer surface of the helical milling cutter;
- and
- a plurality of cutting inserts having at least one cutting edge, wherein each one of the plurality of cutting inserts are connected to a distinct pocket extending generally radially on the outer surface, the cutting inserts are arranged in a helical array along the outer surface in which the at least one cutting edge of each of the plurality of cutting inserts is spaced in an angular circumferential direction from the pocket of the next adjacent cutting insert such that a distinct point on at least two of the one or more cutting edges beyond a first row define part of a layout line having a non-uniform slope.
A helical milling cutter comprising:
- an outer surface of cylindrical configuration;
- a rotational axis about which the outer surface rotates;
- and
- two or more rows arranged on the outer surface generally perpendicular and circumferentially about the rotational axis, wherein each of the two or more rows have three or more cutting inserts each having at least one cutting edge defining part of one or more layout lines having a non-uniform slope.
A helical milling cutter comprising:
- an outer surface;
- a rotational axis about which the outer surface rotates;
- a first row having one or more inserts;
- a second row having one or more inserts, the second row being adjacent to the first row;
- and
- a third row having one or more inserts, the third row being adjacent to the second row, wherein the first, second, and third rows are arranged on the outer surface generally perpendicular and circumferentially about the rotational axis, the one or more inserts of the first, second, and third rows form one or more cutting edges along the rotational axis that define a non-continuous layout line having a non-uniform slope.
