Abstract
Methods and apparatuses provide noise reduction in a demosaiced digital image by processing the digitized signals received from a color pattern pixel array for noise reduction previous to, or as part of, a demosaicing process by using a weight matrix.

A method of processing a digital image, said method comprising:
- receiving digital pixel signals representing a captured image from the pixels of a color pattern pixel array;
- demosaicing said received digital pixel signals to produce said digital image;
- and
- processing said received digital pixel signals with a weight matrix to reduce noise therein previous to or as part of said demosaicing.

An apparatus for processing a digital image, said apparatus comprising:
- a digital image processor configured to perform the steps of:
- receiving digital pixel signals representing a captured image from the pixels of a color pattern pixel array;
- demosaicing said received digital pixel signals to produce said digital image;
- and
- processing said received digital pixel signals with a weight matrix to reduce noise therein previous to or as part of said demosaicing.

- capturing an image from a Bayer patterned pixel array;
- providing digital Bayer pattern pixel signals corresponding to the pixels of said array;
- demosaicing said digital Bayer pattern pixel signals to produce said digital image;
- and
- removing noise from said digital Bayer pattern pixel signals prior to or as part of said demosaicing by using a weight matrix.

An apparatus for processing a digital image, said apparatus comprising:
- a digital image processor configured to perform the steps of:
- capturing an image from a Bayer patterned pixel array;
- providing digital Bayer pattern pixel signals corresponding to the pixels of said array;
- and
- demosaicing or processing said digital Bayer pattern pixel signals with a weight matrix to both remove noise and demosaic the signals.

- a pixel array for capturing an image;
- a readout circuit associated with said pixel array for producing a plurality of analog pixel signals, each representing a color value;
- an analog-to-digital converter for digitizing said analog pixel signals;
- and
- an image processor circuit for receiving said digitized pixel signals and processing a digital image therefrom, said image processing circuit including a processing portion that uses a weight matrix for reducing noise within and demosaicing said digitized pixel signals.
