Abstract
In one embodiment, a method can include: receiving a packet in a device; classifying the received packet as a first packet type or a second packet type; when the packet is the first packet type, forwarding the packet to a next hop; and when the packet is the second packet type: performing forward error correction (FEC) encoding on the packet to generate repair data, modifying the packet by adding a multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) header to indicate that the packet is to be forwarded on an FEC-protected label switched path (LSP), generating an additional MPLS packet carrying the repair data, and forwarding the modified packet and the additional packet to a next hop.
Claims20
A method, comprising:
- receiving a packet in a device;
- classifying the received packet as a first packet type or a second packet type;
- when the packet is the first packet type, forwarding the packet to a next hop;
- and
- when the packet is the second packet type:
- performing forward error correction (FEC) encoding on the packet to generate repair data;
- modifying the packet by adding a multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) header to indicate that the packet is to be forwarded on an FEC-protected label switched path (LSP);
- generating an additional MPLS packet carrying the repair data;
- and
- forwarding the modified packet and the additional packet to a next hop.
An apparatus, comprising:
- one or more processors;
- and
- logic encoded in one or more tangible media for execution by the one or more processors and when executed operable to:
- receive a packet in a device;
- classify the received packet as a first packet type or a second packet type;
- when the packet is the first packet type, forward the packet to a next hop;
- and
- when the packet is the second packet type:
- perform forward error correction (FEC) encoding on the packet to generate repair data;
- modify the packet by adding a multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) header to indicate that the packet is to be forwarded on an FEC-protected label switched path (LSP);
- generate an additional MPLS packet carrying the repair data;
- and
- forward the modified packet and the additional packet to a next hop.
A method, comprising:
- receiving a packet in a device;
- determining if the received packet is a first packet type or a second packet type;
- when the packet is the first packet type, forwarding the packet to a next hop;
- and
- when the packet is the second packet type:
- performing forward error correction (FEC) decoding on the packet;
- modifying the packet by removing a multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) header indicating a label switched path (LSP);
- and
- forwarding the modified packet to a next hop.
An apparatus, comprising:
- one or more processors;
- and
- logic encoded in one or more tangible media for execution by the one or more processors and when executed operable to:
- receive a packet in a device;
- determine if the received packet is a first packet type or a second packet type;
- when the packet is the first packet type, forward the packet to a next hop;
- and
- when the packet is the second packet type:
- perform forward error correction SEC) decoding on the packet;
- modify the packet by removing at least one label that indicates a label switched path (LSP);
- and
- forward the modified packet to a next hop.
